Solid BLS skills

The best way to approach the Advanced Cardiac Life Support class for the first time is to be well versed in your basic life support skills. BLS is the precursor to ACLS. This means without good solid BLS.....ACLS falls apart. Many health care providers have been traumatized by an ACLS provider class and are fearful of having to take it again AND even more fearful of having to do CPR and run an actual code. This really stems from not having a good understanding of BLS and why certain interventions are done.
In my experience with ACLS classes, I have usually found that the students that have the most anxiety about the course generally have poor Basic Life Support skills. It really is a shame when a student leaves a class without a confident understanding of what the ACLS objectives are. Much of this relies on the instructor and his/her ability to move the class through the content at the appropriate pace, and see to it that the weaker students get assistance from the stronger ones as is necessary to build confidence.
As health care providers that are required to have ACLS certification, it ultimately is our responsibility to ask questions until we have a clear understanding of the "why" behind the what. If you leave a classroom with more confidence then when you came in, that is a good indication that there was enlightening that took place and you learned. understand the "why" is essential.
Good solid BLS CPR skills are essential. Running a BLS code with and AED is not very different then running a code with a cardiac monitor and drugs. If you can apply your BLS skills correctly and appropriately given a number of different scenarios, you will do well in ACLS provided you read and have good teachers.
